a teacher from Tahiti launches a YouTube channel for his students • TNTV Tahiti Nui Télévision

Elliot is a professor of physics and chemistry at La Mennais College in Papeete. Polynesia was confined for the first time last year. Teachers are forced to adapt to establish pedagogical continuity, from a distance. Elliot then had the idea to launch a series of videos: “In my discipline, I teach concepts that are difficult for students to understand, especially at a distance. Video makes your concepts more concrete by combining animation, text, and sound. It also allows students to review passages that they have difficulty understanding easily. “

To make the concepts more accessible, the teacher tries to contextualize as much as possible: “Using situations (such as sport for example) that are part of their daily life and that they like”.

start one video channel for his students, a great initiative, but one that involves spending even more time preparing for classes. Elliot had to learn to use video editing and animation software to record his voice … “This takes a long time. (…) It is necessary to take many takes to remove noise from sound recordings (unfortunately I don’t have a studio, just a small microphone). Finally, editing and rendering is a time-consuming exercise. Unfortunately, I don’t make as many videos as I would like. “

Elliot also faces other difficulties: not all of his students have access to digital media in the same way. “Some have access to a computer but they have to share it with all the brothers, others are on the phone, others have internet but not unlimited… (…) We have to face many technical problems in addition to the difficulties of ‘usual learning. “

Distance education also implies a certain degree of autonomy for students. “Students who manage to organize and work regularly obtain satisfactory results. But clearly the situation is not ideal, it is much better to see them in class to help them. We do our best and adapt to the health situation because we have no other option. “

In recent weeks, with the implementation of a new blockade, Elliot decided to relaunch his YouTube channel. He is already preparing a new video: “I’m thinking of releasing a video next week for my Terminale classes, to teach them how to use video analysis software to analyze trajectories in mechanics.”
