«With profound gratitude and pride we welcome the donation of the half-bust of Filippo Mazzei, offered by the “Daughters of the American Revolution“. This sculpture not only enriches our artistic heritage, but represents a tangible symbol of the deep historical and cultural ties between Italy and the United States». Thus the mayor of Pisa, Michele Conticommented on the donation ceremony of the statue dedicated to Filippo Mazzeiwhich was held today at the Municipality of Pisa.

The half-bust, created by the artist Luciano Massari in marble, it was placed in the atrium of Palazzo Gambacorti. Numerous important guests were present at the ceremony, including the president of the Tuscany Region, Eugenio Gianithe American consul in Florence, Daniela Ballardthe president of the Circolo Culturale Filippo Mazzei of Pisa, Massimo Balziand representatives of the “Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)” association, including the president Pamela Wright and the national manager Cara Kavanaugh.

Mayor Conti also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Circolo Culturale Filippo Mazzei of Pisa and its president Massimo Balzi for their commitment to preserving the memory of the illustrious fellow citizen. «Through cultural and informative initiatives, the Club contributes to keeping alive the bond between our city and the figure of Mazzei, while at the same time strengthening the friendly relations between Italy and the United States», underlined the mayor.

Filippo Mazzei, born in Poggio a Caiano in 1730 and died in Pisa on 19 March 1816, was a doctor, philosopher and essayist, known for his fervent support for the principles of individual freedom and civil rights.

His friendship with Thomas Jefferson and his contribution to the spread of democratic principles were fundamental in the birth of the United States of America. Mazzei has been defined as the Italian who, more than any other, promoted knowledge of American ideology and customs in Europe, anticipating the thought of Alexis de Tocqueville by decades. His grave is located in the suburban cemetery of Pisa, next to the main entrance.
