Swedish tourist has collected dozens of bags of waste from the beaches of the Halkidiki peninsula during his vacation in Greece, reports the GRTimes portal, quoted by “Darik”.

Daniel Thornkovist spent thirty days near the village of Nea Roda. Along with enjoying the sea waves, however, he bought garbage bags and began cleaning the beaches in the company of his dog Toki. As a result of his activity, he filled a small garbage truck sent by the local municipality.

The Swede explains that his motive for cleaning is that he loves nature and animals and does not think it is fair for them to come across our waste.

Thornkovist says the most common waste he finds on beaches is plastic bags.

The problem is not only in Greece, but in the whole Mediterranean, explains the Swede. Ten thousand tons of waste is dumped in the Mediterranean every year, and that amount is constantly increasing, says Thornkovist, adding: “I feel terribly angry at how helpless I feel. Even if I collect rubbish every day for the rest of my life, it will be a drop in the ocean. We need to teach the next generation and teach the importance of the environment in school. Governments need to determine who cares for the environment in each country. “
