A survey shows: Men and women think so differently when it comes to money

In many relationships, men and women assess their financial responsibility differently. A current survey shows how different their conclusions are.

Men and women assess differently who is responsible for financial decisions in the partnership. Although a good half of men clearly see themselves as the main decision maker, only seven percent of women clearly assign responsibility to their partner. That shows one An opinion account on behalf of the opinion research institute Innofact Verivox.

More than half of the men (51 per cent) see themselves as the main financial decision makers in the shared household. Another 43 percent say they share financial issues equally in the relationship. Only four percent of men see their partner as the main responsibility for financial matters.

In contrast, women assess their own role in the financial affairs of the shared household much more confidently than their partner gives them: According to their own assessment, 37 percent of women take care of household financial affairs independently. Only seven percent of women see their partner as their main responsibility.

“Men and women rate their role very differently when it comes to common financial issues in the partnership,” said Sandra Vollmer, financial expert and head of Verivox. “While more than half of men assign a primary responsibility for their shared finances, 91 percent of women see themselves as at least equally responsible.”

Women more often see themselves as co-responsible for financial matters: According to the survey, more women (54 percent) than men (43 percent) take care of household finances, to the same level at least. Men, on the other hand, more often see themselves in the role of individual decision-makers.

When you take out financial and insurance products using the Verivox comparison calculator, men are sometimes clearly in the majority, explains Sandra Vollmer. “They can claim primary responsibility for household finances because they are finally graduating. ” However, the results of the survey also showed that a majority of women feel at least equal in decision-making.

Within the age groups, middle-aged women in particular believe they have to take care of financial matters themselves: 42 percent of 30 to 49-year-old women said they are solely responsible for finances or sharing this work with a partner. (51 percent). For younger and older women, this proportion is 34 percent each.

“Middle-aged women are increasingly aware of the importance of financial decisions, because they often have the main responsibility for family decisions, especially at this stage of life. It seems that this encourages them to get actively involved,” said Sandra Vollmer.

Methodology: For the study commissioned by Verivox, the opinion research institute Innofact surveyed a total of 2,497 people online in November 2023, with 33.8 percent men and 66.2 percent women between 18 and 79. The respondents come from an ISO-certified online panel with approximately 500,000 participants.
