A survey carried out by an Ibode of the Montpellier University Hospital highlights the factors of waste in the operating room

PARIS, January 10, 2022 (TecHopital) – A survey published in the journal “Interbloc” from October-December 2021 was carried out by a nurse graduated from the operating theater (Ibode) of the University Hospital of Montpellier, to find out the different factors of waste in the operating room as well as the responsibility of Ibode in this phenomenon.

If the operating room is responsible for 20 to 30% of the waste of a health establishment according to the French Society of Anesthesia and Resuscitation (Sfar), 80% of the waste linked to a surgical intervention would be generated before the actual entry of the patient. patient in the operating room, according to a study carried out in April 2021 by the English anesthesia association.

The survey, carried out in the operating theaters of the Montpellier University Hospital, was carried out in two stages. First, an observation phase was carried out during various surgical procedures in adult orthopedics. The idea is to determine the quantity and nature of wasted medical waste during each type of intervention. In a second step, interviews were conducted with the professionals of the block to better understand their practices.

According to Sfar and the Committee for Sustainable Development in Health (CD2S), the leading cause of overproduction of waste is due to single-use consumables: plastic and paper overwrapping used to guarantee the sterility of medical devices (MD) which represent approximately 19% of waste
