A surgeon in Zurich works remotely in Hong Kong

The researchers from Zurich, together with their colleagues in Hong Kong, have developed a magnetic endoscope that works in all directions and is also easier to control than conventional instruments – and with a delay of only 300 milliseconds. In Hong Kong, the pig was prepared for surgery and the endoscope was taken through the mouth into the stomach. From Zurich, Alexandre Mesot was able to control the endoscope so flexibly that he could examine the entrance to the stomach.

A magnetic endoscope is much smaller than conventional devices, so it can also be inserted into people’s noses. This has the advantage of not requiring general anesthesia, so patients can be aware and follow instructions or give feedback. The magnetic endoscope is also suitable for children because of its size.

With the new technology, minimally invasive procedures can be performed in the gastrointestinal tract. It enables the work of telemedicine in remote areas with poor medical care and a lack of specialists for such procedures. “From a distance, we could even direct trained nurses to perform the procedures,” said Dr. Shannon Melissa Chan from the University of Hong Kong.
