A super full moon will occur on Thursday night, the biggest this year

A super full moon is a phenomenon when the Moon is full and at the same time is closest in its orbit around the Earth. The phenomenon will appear for the second time this year, the first super full moon was in June. It informs about it CTK.

The Moon orbits the Earth in a slightly eccentric ellipse. Sometimes it is closer to the Earth, in the so-called ground floor, and sometimes further – in the ground. Ground and ground times occur in different phases of the moon. If the ground floor is at the time of the full moon, this full moon is slightly larger than those that do not coincide with the time of the ground floor. The distance of the Moon from the Earth also varies at different altitudes.

According to Petr Horálek from the Institute of Physics in Opava, the Moon will come closest to the Earth at 11:09 CET, at a distance of 357,263 kilometers. It will then be in the full moon phase at 20:38 CEST. During the super full moon in June, the Moon was at ground level at a distance of 357,428 kilometers from Earth.

In a press release, Horálek pointed out that although it will be the largest angular full moon of the year, people will not see the giant moon. It will be only about 15 percent larger than the angular smallest of the year.

“However, what always catches the eye, regardless of the size of the full moon, is the rise of the moon over the horizon. An optical illusion in which our brain compares the size of the Moon to distant objects on the horizon actually makes us feel that the Moon is ‘huge,’” added the astronomer.
