A Super Blood Moon Total Lunar Eclipse Can Be Observed Without Tools

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Total lunar eclipse Perigee or Super Blood Moon reported to be on Wednesday, 26 May 2021. The Bosscha Observatory said the astronomical phenomenon could be witnessed without tools.

“Can be seen directly without tools,” said Bosscha on the official website, Tuesday (25/5).

The phenomenon of a total lunar eclipse is also called the Super Blood Moon because when an eclipse occurs, the Moon tends to appear reddish in color. This reddish color is the source of the designation “blood” or bleeding.

There are several factors that appear to affect the color of the Moon. This factor depends on the conditions of the sky above, or is influenced by dust, clouds and Earth’s atmospheric conditions when the phenomenon occurs.

You can go out of the room to witness the phenomenon with the naked eye. Because, unlike a lunar eclipse, it is not like a solar eclipse, where the intensity of the light can harm the eye.

The difference in light intensity is because the Moon only gets light from the reflection of sunlight. Not as a light source like the sun. Even so, you can also use a telescope or binoculars to get a closer look at the phenomenon.

Bosscha said the Moon will reach its full phase on that date. The moon is said to be located almost directly across from the Sun in the sky, placing it high above the horizon throughout the night.

Head of BMKG Bandung Teguh Rahayu said that his party would use Vixen Sphinx ED80SF binoculars to observe GBT. Observations were made at the Slopes of Anteng Dago Bakery Punclut, Lembang, West Bandung Regency, at 15.00-21.00 WIB.

“And the people around the location can witness the eclipse process while still carrying out health protocols (maintaining distance and wearing masks), and can be watched live through https://www.bmkg.go.id/gbt, “said Rahayu in a written statement, Monday (24/5).

The weather condition when the observation is expected to be cloudy from day to night with a chance of rain from 14.00-18.00 WIB.

GBT occurs when the positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned. This occurs when the Moon is in the Earth’s umbra, which results in the peak of a total lunar eclipse, the Moon will appear red or better known as the Blood Moon.

Because the position of the Moon during an eclipse is in the closest position to Earth (Perigee), the Moon will look bigger than the normal full moon phases, so it is often called the Super Moon.

LAPAN explained that GBT will take place with a partiality duration of 3 hours 8 minutes 12 seconds. Meanwhile, the duration of the totality is quite short, which is 18 minutes 28 seconds.

The peak of the eclipse is predicted to occur at 18:18.43 WIB / 19.18.43 WITA / 20.18.43 WIT (delta T = 69 seconds) with an umbra magnitude of 1.0153 and a penumbra magnitude of 1.9787.

“This eclipse can be witnessed when the Moon rises from the East-Southeast to Southeastern direction near the Scorpius constellation,” said LAPAN.
