How many times jokingly does a motorist turn to his car calling it a “trap”, making fun of the possibility of having an accident? These three cars, given in hand, maybe they really are …
We at Quattromania care a lot to safety of our readers who get behind the wheel every day. In the past we have seen two interesting rankings: that of the most disastrous crash tests in history – which fortunately often concern cars that are not even salable in Europe – and that of the safest, discovering which cars give us more safety in the event of an accident.
Today, we will see a new ranking of the three most “lethal” cars in the world according to the US Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. The US national agency collected data from 1989 to 2017 regarding fatal accidents in the country to understand if there was a correlation of some kind between certain car models and fatal accidents that occurred. Before starting with the list, however, it is necessary to make two clarifications.
The first, these are numerical data: we do not know in how many of the cases listed by the IISH the fatal accident was actually caused by the car in question and in which the fault lies with the driver, a breakdown or external factors. The second: all three vehicles in this unenviable top 3 have been in production for a very long time and they sold a lot. The more cars in circulation, the more accidents are, it’s statistics. That said, here are the three deadliest cars according to the Americans.
The Fiesta is over
With 98 fatal accidents per million units sold, in third place in this ranking no car would ever want to be is the Chevrolet Sonic. This car, which has changed its design several times during the year 2000, is the classic American low cost subcompact. The car is very popular but still less than the cars that are in second and first place.
On the second step of the podium of the deadliest cars we find the Hyundai Accent, a small Korean car that has been on the market since 1995 and which according to the data was the protagonist of 116 fatal accidents per million units sold. This car it is already less widespread in Europe where Hyundai has an excellent reputation for the safety and reliability of their cars.
In the first place, the unexpected Ford Fiesta four-door. According to the ISHH, as many as 141 fatalities in a million have had a Fiesta as a protagonist. Considering that the car has been produced since 1976 and that it sells practically all over the world – including China and Taiwan – this figure must certainly be reduced. Either way, the prize for the deadliest car is yours. Would you ever have said that about a car that looked so innocent?
