A new study focused on the nutrition and mental health of young athletes finds an association between higher rates of protein consumption and lower symptoms of depression.

The researchers found that eating more carbohydrates, proteins, and polyunsaturated fatty acids would lead to a decrease in depression symptoms.
They concluded that there is a positive relationship between the intake of fats and sugars in general and future symptoms of depression.
Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of nutrition to treat mental health disorders, finding that those with severe mental disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression tend to eat a poor diet that contains a lot of calories.
