A strong earthquake shook eastern Turkey today, the Disaster and Emergency Service said, citing the Associated Press.
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook the town of Pyuturge in Malatya County at 5:02 p.m. local time, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Service (AFAD) said. The depth of the quake was 6.7 kilometers.
AFAD said there were no reports of injuries or serious damage.
“So far we have not received any negative signals. Our teams continue to carry out on-site inspections,” Malatya Governor Ayden Barush told the Anatolian State Agency.
Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum said the Turkish government is closely monitoring the situation.
Earlier, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported a quake with a magnitude of 5.6 and a depth of 2 kilometers, and subsequently adjusted the magnitude of 5 and a depth of 7 kilometers.
Turkey is located on major fault lines and earthquakes are frequent.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake in January 2020 shook neighboring Elazığ County, killing 41 people and injuring more than 1,600. In 1999, at least 17,000 people died in a powerful earthquake in northwestern Turkey.
