A strong earthquake scared the inhabitants of the southeastern city of Hatay this evening at 21:13 (20:13 Bulgarian time).
The directorate for emergencies and natural disasters of the Ankara presidency (AFAD) announced that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale, in Karakkhan, Hatay county. The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 11.7 km and was located 10 km from Karakkhan in Hatay county.
“The earthquake was felt in downtown and areas of Hatay and surrounding cities such as Gaziantep, Adana, Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş. So far, we have no reports of casualties or serious damage. Our teams are inspecting the area,” the mayor said of Hatay Municipality, Lutfu Savash from his social media account.
Some citizens of major cities in the area have come out of their homes and into parks in anticipation of possible aftershocks.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca also said: “So far we have no citizens hospitalized due to the earthquake.”
The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus.
