In numerous lists of the best in the trade press, it has emerged as the best film since the turn of the millennium. Nevertheless, anyone who has never seen “Mulholland Drive” can catch up on David Lynch’s masterpiece at Paramount+, among other places.
Every year, critics take part in polls to crown the best films of the year, decade or century. However, the best lists of cinema highlights since 2000 have remained relatively unchanged in recent years. The front ranks, at least, regularly make their way to Paul Thomas Anderson’s grandiosely acted oil drama There Will Be Blood, David Fincher’s serial killer thriller masterpiece Zodiac and Wong Kar-Wai’s beautiful love story In The Mood For Love” out. And yet one and the same film is often enthroned at number 1, on which all those masterpieces regularly bite their teeth: „Mulholland Drive‘ by David Lynch.
The unorthodoxly told and nightmarishly staged thriller about the country bumpkin Betty (Naomi Watts), who wants to make it big in Hollywood and finally gets caught up in a whirlpool of lust, violence and dreams after meeting an unknown beauty (Laura Harring), but is not only suspense cinema par excellence, but a unique and unforgettable experience that every film fan should have had at least once. With “Mulholland Drive” David Lynch (“Twin Peaks”) created an extraordinary film between genius and madness – which maybe not everyone can relate to, but which probably nobody will forget again. It’s not without reason that the mindfuck thriller is also included in our list of the most disturbing films of all time. In contrast to most of the other titles in the ranking, we gave the full 5 stars for “Mulholland Drive” in the review.
