A strange thing is happening at the North Pole. NASA found a suspicious anomaly

The polar tip is an area above the North Pole that contains a small section of unusually dense air.

NASA has discovered another anomaly in Earth’s atmosphere, a hole above the North Pole. She was spotted at an altitude of over 400 kilometers. It is a funnel-shaped hollow space that opens into the Earth’s magnetic field every day at noon local time. The zone is formed by an empty space in the magnetic field of our planet, and as a result, the spacecraft slow down here. Scientists don’t know why.

The mysterious funnel-shaped gap still baffles experts, although it was already explored two years ago. That’s why NASA will continue to focus on this strange anomaly in the Earth’s atmosphere.

As early as 2021, a rocket was launched from Norway as part of the CREX-2 mission. The mission’s goal was to investigate this disparity in speed on the planet’s north pole. Through the mission, NASA wanted to reveal more details about this area. The rocket was to study the electrical and magnetic effects of the interaction between charged particles from the Sun and the upper atmosphere and measure the behavior of winds. At the same time, designated observers observed it from Earth, who should have put their conclusions together.

The rocket launch had already been postponed two years ago due to bad weather. The project requires special conditions to be carried out accurately.

What is causing this hole

The strange thing is that the funnel-shaped crack can only be observed at noon, when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky. Scientists believe that it is this funnel-shaped gap that creates the space where the solar wind interacts with the Earth’s atmosphere, thus adversely affecting the functioning of satellites and spacecraft.

The Earth’s magnetic field plays a key role in protecting the planet from deadly radiation from the Sun. However, this particular hole affects spaceships passing through the area. NASA researchers also found that spacecraft passing through the area often slowed down due to this anomaly.

“About 400 km above Earth, spacecraft experience more drag, a bit like hitting a bump.” He said Marco Conder, principal investigator of the CREX-2 mission and physicist at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. According to NASA, the anomaly could be due to electrical and magnetic effects in the ionosphere, which is the layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere ionized by the sun.

As part of the CREX-2 experiment, which took place at the end of last year in Norway, 20 containers were launched from the rocket. Each was the size of a can and had its own rocket engine. The containers were pointed in different directions and released vapor tracers at different heights. These particles then lit up and created a kind of bright cloud that should help scientists better understand the whole area.

The polar tip allows the solar wind to directly access the Earth’s atmosphere, causing strange behavior of the radio and GPS signals.

NASA hopes to understand several scenarios that will explain this anomaly.
