Stuart Dobson, 77, was surprised when he received a letter of sympathy and tax relief from South Norfolk Council. He wrote a reply to the municipality that he was still alive and that such a failure of the municipality had caused him emotional suffering, and he himself delivered it to the addressee. “Do I look dead to you?” asked the angry old man.
“It’s a piece of cake, they’re asking me to fill out a form while treating me as dead, it doesn’t make any sense,” he said, questioning the “common sense and ability to think rationally” of municipal workers.
Such an aggravated reaction was facilitated by the sad fact that his wife of 54 years had died a month ago.
The municipality apologized to him. “The municipality apologized to Mr Dobson for the error in updating our records following Ms Dobson’s death, and we regret that our error has upset Mr Dobson at this difficult time,” a spokesman said.
