“A Strange Loop” Leads Tony Award Nominations – NBC4 New York

NEW YORK – The musical “A Strange Loop”, a play about an artist who wants to write a musical, leads the United States Tony Awards with eleven nominations, which reward the best musical and theatrical productions on Broadway and which were announced this Monday in New York.

The work, a metamusical that addresses the doubts and efforts of a young artist, and which has been created by Michael R. Jackson, will compete with five other works to be chosen as the best musical of the 2021-2012 season2: “Six: The Musical”, “Paradise Square”, “MJ”, “Mr. Saturday Night”, and “Girl From the North Country”.

“Six” tells the story of the six wives of King Henry VIII; “Paradise Square” dwells on race relations in 19th-century New York; “MJ” is a biographical work on Michael Jackson; “Mr. Saturday Night,” a remake of the movie of the same name, and “Girl From the North Country” focuses on Depression-era Minnesota with music by Bob Dylan.

The 75th edition of the awards will reward the works that were performed between August 1, 2021 and May 4, 2022 in one of the 41 Broadway theaters in the first full theatrical season after the closure imposed by the pandemic in March 2020 .

Of the 34 works that were eligible, a total of 29 entered the nominations.

“A Strange Loop” is closely followed by “MJ” and “Paradise Square” with ten nominations each, “Company” with nine, “The Lehman Trilogy” and “Six: The Musical” with eight, and “Girl From The North Country” and “For colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf”, also with seven each.

On the other hand, in this edition of the awards, another five works aspire to best play; Martin McDonagh’s “Clyde’s”; “The Lehman Trilogy,” written by Stefano Massini and Ben Power; “The Minutes” by Tracy Letts and “Skeleton Crew” by Dominique Morisseau.

Billy Crystal, Myles Frost, Hugh Jackman, Rob McClure and Jaquel Spivey are nominated for Best Actor in a Musical. While Sharon Clarke, Carmen Cusack, Sutton Foster, Joaquina Kalukango and Mare Winningham aspire to the Tony for best female performance.

In the theatrical section, the actresses who struggle to shine among their peers are Gabby Beans, LaChanze, Ruth Negga, Deirdre O’Connell, Mary-Louise Parker, while Simon Russel Beale, Adam Godley, Adrian Lester aspire to become better actors. , David Morse, Sam Rockwell, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and David Threlfall.

The Tonys, which award 26 categories, are organized by the American Theater Wing and the Broadway League, and will be announced at a ceremony in New York on Sunday, June 12.
