/ world today news/ The statement of the US State Department on the occasion of the elections in Taiwan represents a gross violation of the “one China” principle, the three joint Sino-American communiques and Washington’s commitment to maintain only cultural, commercial and unofficial ties with Taiwan. It sends the wrong signal to separatists in Taiwan, which Beijing strongly opposes and has issued a formal protest to Washington, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said today.
The Taiwan issue is central to China’s interests and the most important red line in its relationship with Washington. The principle of “one China” is the consensus of the international community, and relations between China and other countries are built on it. Beijing has always firmly opposed any formal ties between the US and Taiwan and US interference in Taiwan affairs under any pretext.
We call on Washington to abide by the principle of “one China” and the three joint communiques, fulfill its promises not to support Taiwan independence, “two Chinas” or “one China and one Taiwan”, stop contacts with Taiwan and not send wrong signals to the separatists on the island, the spokesman added.
