This past Saturday the Regional Park of Calblanque, Monte de las Cenizas and Peña del Águila woke up with a surprise. A specimen of red sunfish, the only warm-blooded fish, was found dead on one of its beaches. I weighed about 35 kilograms and measured approximately 1.45 meters.
It is a fish that usually inhabits the depths of the waters of practically all the world’s oceans of warm or temperate waters, including the Mediterranean Sea, although it is not usual to see it near the coast.
This fish essence, whose scientific name is ‘Lampris Guttatus’ is the only homeothermic fish, that is, it regulates its temperature like mammals or birds do. This means that it can move faster in cold and deep waters, to be able to catch its prey, which includes squid or smaller fish. Their body heat is produced through the constant flapping of their pectoral fins.
