In a striking interview, Kai Havertz indicates that he feels closely connected to donkeys. The multi-purpose Chelsea player states that he has the same character as a donkey.
“Some of my teammates call me an ass,” Havertz begins in conversation with The Guardian. “It’s not because of my game,” he adds. “From day one I feel a special bond with donkeys. Donkeys are very calm. Maybe I recognize myself in them, because I am also calm. They hang out all day, don’t really do much and just live their lives.”
Havertz says that when he is defeated he sometimes goes to a shelter for donkeys. “You look at them and see something human in them. It’s a kind of recovery, a place where I feel peace.” When Havertz turned eighteen, he got three donkeys. “A special gift, adopted from a shelter.”
After the floods in Germany in 2021, Havertz started a charity, inspired by animal welfare and also focused on youth and elderly care. “Football is the most beautiful thing in the world, but not the most important thing in my life. There are things that are a hundred times more important. It’s not easy to say and maybe people don’t like to hear it, but that’s how I feel. “
