The Committee of Representatives of the Union Assembly (CRPH), also known as the civil government and made up of elected parliamentarians deposed by the military junta, has announced the hiring of the law firm Volterra Fietta to carry out legal proceedings “against the unconstitutional military regime and illegitimate “, without specifying before which court he wants to present the complaints.
Nistal, who has worked in London for Volterra Fietta since 2012, has experience in representing countries in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia and in offering his advice on proceedings before the International Criminal Court.
“These international legal proceedings will take time, but we will carry them out vigorously and swiftly to hold the perpetrators of these widespread and systematic human rights violations, including soldiers, police and common criminals, accountable. We are gathering large amounts of evidence to use in these procedures, “CRPH said in a statement.
For its part, Volterra Fietta pointed out that it will support Burma “to hold the perpetrators of these flagrant violations of international law responsible before all relevant forums,” according to the specialized Legal 360 portal.
The so-called civilian government of Burma, which groups together part of the parliamentarians elected in the elections of last November who could not formally assume their seats due to the military uprising, considers the military “responsible for the armed aggression against the population of Burma and their legitimate democratic representatives “.
The Burmese Army detained part of the elected government on February 1, including the leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and justified the coup by alleged electoral fraud in the elections last November in which the National League for the Democracy.
The security forces have brutally repressed the peaceful protests that have been taking place across the country for five weeks against the coup and have killed more than 125 protesters.
The Spanish lawyer has advised States and individuals on proceedings before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and has represented foreign investors and countries in arbitrations on large investments, according to the Volterra Fietta website.
In addition, he has taught classes in Maritime Law and International Environmental Law at King’s College London and has conducted training courses on international public law and international investment law for senior officials from countries in Africa and the Middle East.
