A South Korean writer received the Nobel Prize for Literature – Agro Plovdiv – 2024-10-10 11:34:00

The Nobel reward for literature for 2024 is awarded to the author of South Korea Han Kang.

Alfred Nobel

The prize is awarded to Han Kang for her powerful poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and reveals the fragility of human life. “She has a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead, and in a poetic and experimental style she has become an innovator in modern prose,” said Nobel committee chairman Anders Olsson.

With The Vegetarian, the laureate said, “I wanted to portray a woman who desperately no longer wanted to belong to the human race and who desperately wanted to give up being part of humanity that commits such violence.”

Her novel Human Acts was a finalist for the Booker International Prize in 2018.

The literary prize has long faced criticism for being too focused on European and North American writers with prose rich in style and light on history. It was also dominated by men, with only 17 women among the 119 laureates to this year’s prize. The last woman to win the Nobel was Anne Hernaud of France in 2022.
