Andreas Gallozzi, a French volunteer fighter and Icaunian by adoption, was killed on February 16 during clashes with Russian troops on Ukrainian soil, near Luhansk.
On the morning of Thursday February 16, Andreas Gallozzi, 22 years old and a French volunteer fighter in Ukraine, died. He was reportedly hit in the neck by shrapnel during fighting in the Luhansk region. In 2022, he joined the International Legion, a unit of non-Ukrainian fighters. This is the third Frenchman killed in Ukraine since the start of the war.
Andreas Gallozi was born in 2000 in the Paris region, he lived in Saint-Valérien, in Yonne. Before leaving for Ukraine, he served in the 17th parachute engineer regiment of Montauban in 2020. But he decided to resign a few months later. Suffering from several illnesses, he was afraid of being deemed unfit for combat, explains Edith Gallozzi, his mother.
In 2021, he began a history degree course at the University of Dijon, but interrupted it to become a stretcher-bearer in a clinic.
On February 24, 2022, war broke out in Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelensky appeals for foreigners to come and fight alongside Ukrainian troops. This solicitation resonates with the young Icaunais, who decides to join the International Legion, the non-Ukrainian fighters. His mother did not agree with this choice. But the young man decides to leave anyway. “It was his goal, his reason for living“, testifies Edith Gallozzi.
She was contacted on February 16 by the International Legion, which informed her of the death of her son. Andreas Gallozzi was 22 years old. He is the third French soldier killed in action during the war in Ukraine.
