A solar storm is coming. May disrupt radio and GPS signal

“The independent” reports that the solar storm was a result of the release of plasma and magnetic energy from the sun, which took place on July 15th. During the weekend, a huge structure of plasma and magnetic field called “prominence” broke away from the sun.

“The sheer size of prominence is impressive,” says Dr. Sebastian Voltmer, who captured the image of the phenomenon. “It was spectacular to see the very fast moving part of this burst,” said the scientist, quoted by “The independent”.

Such eruptions are capable of releasing 100,000. times more energy than all power plants on Earth generate in a year.

Solar storms appear when Sun is in the active phase of its 11-year solar cycle. This phenomenon will become more frequent, scientists predict.

Powerful solar storms can have severe effects on human activities. Some studies suggest that satellites fall from their orbits due to increased solar wind activity, and that smaller units, known as CubeSats, may be completely destroyed.

Scientists can predict the occurrence of solar storms by observing the maximum rate of increase in sunspot activity. This process shows just how powerful the cycle to come can be. Thanks to this, we can secure our energy networks, communication equipment and the Internet in advance.
