a software update boosts their performance

It only takes a few changes in lines of code to improve the performance of a Tesla. The Model S and X are gaining speed, range and agility through software updates. Recent modifications by the manufacturer further boost the performance of the two high-end electrics.

The idea of constantly improving your vehicle without any hacks done in a garage is something quite fascinating. Tesla owners regularly benefit from a improved autonomy, power and speed through simple updates. The specialists of the Car and Driver site confronted a Tesla Model S and a Porsche Taycan Turbo S history of comparing their performance.

The Tesla was not only slower at startup, but also less enduring during a first test carried out last February. Its performance in the 0 to 100 km / s was eroded after repetitive tests, the opposite of the Taycan which started again and again with little impact on its results.

Tesla Model S and X: they accelerate faster thanks to an update

Since this first test, Tesla has deployed numerous software updates to its global fleet, including an update called “Cheetah Stance”. She improves the momentum of Tesla Model S and X in several ways, in particular by acting on the adaptive suspension of the two vehicles and by conditioning their battery to a higher temperature to increase its impedance. These changes made them faster and more agile.

A few months after the duel between the Model S and the Taycan on a track, Car and Driver tested the Model S again. In the previous test, 15 consecutive accelerations were performed on each of the two vehicles. Tesla shot 0-100 km / h in 2.5 seconds for the first try, 0.1 seconds faster than the Taycan. In terms of endurance, the Model S slowed down considerably as it tried to stabilize at around 6 seconds, compared to a marginal gap for the Porshse.

The results of the new test confirm the improvements announced by Tesla. The acceleration of the Model S has indeed increased to 2.4 seconds for the 0 to 100 km / h, thus catching up with the Taycan Turbo S. And ” over all 15 tests, the average time dropped by two seconds compared to our previous test ”, notes Car and Drive. In other words, the Model S went from 6 seconds on average to 4 seconds after the update. This is a significant performance gain and especially impressive for modifications made only by playing on lines of code.
