The cinema summer of 2023 is just around the corner – and offers superhero spectacles, the eagerly awaited “Barbie” film and Harrison Ford’s (80) farewell performance as Indiana Jones. The biggest cinema blockbusters of the coming weeks and months at a glance.
“The Flash”, 15. Juni
With the superhero film “The Flash” after competitor Marvel, the DC universe will also become the multiverse. Ezra Miller (30) plays the extremely fast title hero, already known from “Justice League” (2017) and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016). In his first solo film, The Flash tries to undo the past to prevent the death of a loved one – with unpredictable consequences.
The special thing about “The Flash”: The multiverse concept makes Michael Keaton’s (71) return as Batman possible. Keaton embodied the Dark Knight in Tim Burton’s (64) universally loved comic book classics “Batman” (1989) and “Batman Returns” (1992). Ben Affleck (50), who also plays Batman, Sasha Calle (27) and Michael Shannon (48) complete the cast.
“Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny,” June 29
On June 29th the probably most anticipated blockbuster of the summer will start in German cinemas. In “Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny”, acting icon Harrison Ford becomes the whip-wielding archaeologist from the title one last time. The adventure film follows on from 2008’s less than well-received ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’.
“Indy” this time deals with Nazis around Jürgen Voller, played by Mads Mikkelsen (57), who tried to change the course of history in the 1960s. Other roles include “Fleabag” star Phoebe Waller-Bridge (37) as Indy’s goddaughter Helena Shaw and Antonio Banderas (62). James Mangold (59) replaces Steven Spielberg (76) as director.
“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One”, July 13
Superstar Tom Cruise (60) wants to know again. Following 2018’s hugely successful ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout,’ the action star returns as agent Ethan Hunt for the two-part finale of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series. In “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” Hunt has to deal with a new adversary named Gabriel (Esai Morales, 60) and has to save nothing less than the entire planet.
“Mission: Impossible” fans can look forward to familiar faces among the actors such as Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson and Ving Rhames. Brand new is alongside villain actor Morales Marvel star Hayley Atwell (41). “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two” is scheduled to hit theaters in June 2024, ending the long-running spy film franchise.
“Oppenheimer”, 20. July
Star director Christopher Nolan (52), who became known for “Inception” (2010), “Interstellar” (2014) and the “Dark Knight” trilogy (2005-2012), among other things, tells in “Oppenheimer” about the development of the first atomic bomb in the Manhattan Project. Cillian Murphy (47) plays the title character J. Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967). In addition, the Oscar winners Matt Damon, Rami Malek and Gary Oldman as well as “Iron Man” Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh belong to the impressive star ensemble of the historical film.
“Barbie”, 20. July
The highly anticipated comedy “Barbie” starts on July 20th and stars Margot Robbie (32) and Ryan Gosling (42) as Barbie and Ken. Even the candy-colored trailer for the film adaptation of the legendary toy doll, which is as imaginative as it is original, caused a sensation. Now cinema viewers are looking forward to seeing Barbie leave her toy country to get to know the real world, directed by “Lady Bird” filmmaker Greta Gerwig (39).
“The Equalizer 3 – The Final Chapter”, 31. August
Oscar winner Denzel Washington (68), who appears one last time as “Equalizer” Robert McCall, concludes the cinema summer. In the action film “The Equalizer 3 – The Final Chapter” the superstar takes on the Italian mafia. Ex-government agent McCall wants to find peace in southern Italy, only to discover that his new friends are under the control of the local mafia. Without further ado, he takes on the powerful, new opponents.
