Les Tissages de Charlieu signed a very large contract on Thursday, May 27, reports France Blue Saint-Etienne Loire. The textile company from Roannais, in the Loire, will manufacture Auchan’s shopping bags. The supermarket chain intends to replace its plastic tote bags with recycled fabric bags as of next fall. Production is due to start in October and benefits from the State’s recovery plan with 800,000 euros.
Les Tissages de Charlieu will have to produce 10 million shopping bags per year and Auchan is committed for five years. Until now, the brand had its bags made in Vietnam with polypropylene from Saudi Arabia.
To ensure the production of shopping bags for Auchan, Tissages de Charlieu plan to create 60 jobs by the end of this year and more than 95 by 2024. The company currently employs 70 people. The SME will also invest 22 million euros in this project, in particular to expand and equip itself with machines for recycling used textile fibers.
Auchan will sell this tote for 2 euros, approximately double the price of current shopping bags. But on its own, this reusable tote “will avoid the production of 1360 tonnes of plastic each year. The carbon impact is at least divided by four”, says Jean-Denis Deweine, Auchan’s managing director.
