Three years after the demolition work began, the foundation stone for the 52-storey tower was symbolically laid early on Wednesday evening. The tower is being built according to plans by the Frankfurt-based architectural firm KSP Engel, which won the competition for the project in 2001. The high-rise is scheduled to be ready for occupancy in the first quarter of 2028. Züblin is acting as general contractor.

Plenty of office space, restaurants and a museum – the new Central Business Tower in Frankfurt

The new building will offer around 66,000 square metres of office space. The five-storey base building with a listed façade will be used by the public. In addition to catering, it will also house a branch of the Frankfurt Museum of World Cultures.

The Landesbank Hessen-Thüringen (Helaba) as the developer and the city of Frankfurt had already announced corresponding plans in May 2020. At the time, it was said that temporary exhibitions with objects that could not be presented in the villas on Schaumainkai could be shown there.

Central Business Tower to become the “highlight” of Frankfurt’s new cultural mile

The office space in the Central Business Tower is still available, but according to Helaba, rental contracts have not yet been signed. The bank is still not planning to use the new building itself. “We feel very comfortable in the Maintower,” said board member Christian Schmid on Wednesday evening at the construction site on Taunusanlage. The tower will become a landmark, he predicted. But after such a long lead time, it is time for something to happen.

The tower will not only enrich the skyline, but will also become a lively place for exchange and encounters, said Frankfurt’s mayor Mike Josef (SPD). A blind spot that some have even described as an eyesore will become a highlight of the city.

The project is exemplary for the further development of the banking district and is another important building block for the cultural mile. This will extend from the Jewish Museum, across Willy-Brandt-Platz, where the new opera house is to be built, to the Old Opera House. An important element will be the new theater, which is planned for the Sparkasse site. (Christoph Manus)
