About 10 years ago, I was in the semi-finals of “The Voice of Bulgaria”.
We had to choose songs to sing a duet with a famous artist. For this purpose, a meeting was held in Slavi Trifonov’s office. I sat relatively nervous and awaited my task.

It was not an easy season. I was the ONLY contestant who endured constant reprimands and criticism from the judges. Everyone else, when they made a mistake, received encouraging comments. Only I was criticized with all my might when there was something for it.

For example, after my flawless performances of “Speed” and “Wealth”, they didn’t say anything. But after “Fly away” they ruined me. And after “Hallelujah” I was in a hole. On stage I couldn’t keep my composure, my voice shook and at the end of the performance I hid my face to wipe away the tears.
I was young, and very soon I had lost my mentor – Andrey Batashov. This song was infinitely precious to him and it was as if I saw him in the audience for a moment…
I got no support, they just decided to bring me down. Then they made fun of me in “Slavi’s Show”, it was lovely!
I was wondering why this is happening. I was polite, serious, respectful… I worked hard (despite zero attention and no time to work. The songs were sung in one rehearsal.) and I didn’t complain.
Why am I telling this? To say why Kiril Marichkov is so important to me.
After the quarter-final and the “Hallelujah” in question, Margarita Hranova was in “Predi Obed”, who praised and defended my performance and the emotion I showed. It gave me the strength to keep my head up and keep going. (I have to mention her, I will always be grateful..)
So, we return to Slavi Trifonov’s office. They reach me. I hear whispers: “Todor, you will sing with Galya from Karisma”. I felt dizzy with terror. I looked startled. “What, isn’t she worthy of you?!”. “No, I just don’t know what we’re going to sing, I can’t sing like Miro…”.
“You will sing. Period.”
I came home terrified. This is not me, how do I get into this image…?
And at that moment of complete despair, Evgeni Dimitrov called me… “Toshe, I’m Evgeni, Galya can’t come to Bulgaria, you’ll be singing with Kiril Marichkov!”.
Such a powerful wave of joy engulfed me…
I had to choose between Rock in the Past, Taste of Time and I think My World. I chose the strong rock and roll and whatever happens!
I called Mr. Marichkov. He invited me to their place! I went, he sat down at the piano. We rehearsed for over two hours! He explained everything to me. The message of the song. The phrasing. How it should be served. We made it..
His presence, his calmness, his encouragement… We went on stage and I felt safe, alive. And for the first time – a performer. He pulled me out of the hole I was in.
I will always be grateful to him for his kind heart, warm smile, support and this performance of ours. I was just a boy, and next to me stood a legend.
