One way to prevent coronavirus infection is to wear a medical or tissue mask.
However, the disadvantage of this method is the low level of protection for the person who put on the mask.
The remedy is recommended for people with COVID-19 symptoms so that they do not infect others.
Nevertheless, the mask can protect against infection and the person who put it on.
US experts have proposed a way to increase the effectiveness of personal protective equipment. Scientists’ recommendations are published in the American Journal of Infection Control.
For additional protection against coronavirus, experts suggest using saline solution, which can act as a filter layer of the mask.
A paper towel or filter should be soaked in saline. The concentration should be as follows: 30 grams of salt per 100 milliliters of distilled water. After that, the towel needs to be dried.
The effectiveness of this method was proved during the experiment. Scientists sprayed liquid nanoparticles on the surface of the filter, which in size coincide with the pathogen SARS-CoV-2.
As a result, the efficiency of the paper towel soaked in saline was even higher than that of the filter layer of the surgical mask.
The fact is that the particles of the pathogen COVID-19 are retained by the crystal lattice of salt molecules.
