A simple blood test to detect Alzheimer’s disease

The “Biomarkers of Aging and Dementia” project (BIOVIE), led by Dr. Pedro Rosa-Neto, aims to develop a blood test that can detect Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms appear. This test, which could replace expensive and invasive diagnostic methods such as brain imaging and lumbar puncture, seeks to identify amyloid plaques and the TAU protein present in the blood. If validated, this test could revolutionize the early diagnosis of dementia, offering the possibility of intervening before clinical symptoms develop. Dr. Rosa-Neto anticipates a “paradigm shift” in the field, potentially achievable within the next one to two years, thanks to technological advances supported by the Fonds de recherche du Québec.

Currently, in Canada or in other countries, there is not enough infrastructure to administer traditional tests to everyone. We are in the process of validating blood tests. [c’est-à-dire d’en comparer les résultats avec les tests traditionnels] to use them on a large scale, among family doctors. This opens up the possibility of treating people before they develop dementia.
