The city of Tripoli, in northern Lebanon, woke up, on Wednesday, to a horrific story, after a citizen found a black bag pulled by a dog, and inside it was a live baby girl.
In the details, the incident occurred at dawn around 3:30 a.m., near the Tripoli municipality building, where a citizen passed by the place to see a dog dragging a black bag, from which a moaning sound was issued.
According to the narration that spread among the Tripolitans, the man took the initiative to take the bag, only to discover that inside it was a newborn baby girl. He immediately transferred her to the “Islamic Hospital” in the city.
Information indicates that the child was transferred to the government hospital at a later time, with injuries in various parts of her body.
Al-Hurra website tried to communicate with the concerned hospitals without being able to obtain official details, and according to the information, it is expected that official data will be issued on the concerned hospitals in similar cases.
The municipality of Tripoli has shown that it is not aware of the incident so far, and in contact with the “Al-Hurra” website with the mayor, Ahmed Qamar Al-Din, the latter confirmed that he was not aware of the incident that occurred near the municipality building, explaining that today is an official holiday in the country on the occasion of the Hijri New Year.
The incident sparked great shock in Lebanon and the city of Tripoli in particular, and great disapproval of what they described as the “lack of humanity” represented in this incident.
Others considered that had it not been for the dog’s intervention to draw attention to the bag, the matter would not have been discovered and the infant would have died, which made them see “in animals more mercy than humans,” as one of the tweeters put it.
This comes at a time when the city of Tripoli, and all the Lebanese, have not escaped the shock of the incident of the 6-year-old girl Lynn Talib, who died early this month, after being raped, while the security forces are still investigating the incident to uncover its circumstances.
Lebanon’s children suffer from poor social conditions that deprive them of their most basic rights to food, clothing, education, toys and others, according to reports issued by UNICEF.
Children have also recently become the most prominent victims of the traumatic violence that Lebanon has witnessed recently, as the “Hemaya” organization recorded in 2022 2,766 cases of violence, 27 percent of which are related to cases of neglect, 29 percent physical violence, 21 percent psychological violence, and 11 percent exploitation. The rate of sexual violence also increased by 4 percent from 2021, when it reached 12 percent. During the first five months of 2023, the organization responded to 1,415 cases of violence.
