A shock exhibition in Draguignan to eliminate violence against women

Supported by the Mots et Maux de femmes collective, an exhibition against violence against women will be offered from Tuesday February 22 to Tuesday March 8, in the hall of the Draguignan judicial court.

“This free exhibition will be held between European Victims Day and International Women’s Day”specifies Nathalie Fèvre, the president of the judicial court of Draguignan.

A traveling exhibition

“We have responded to the request of the collective which offers this traveling exhibition in 500 cities in Franceadds Patrice Camberou, public prosecutor of the Dracénoise jurisdiction.

In a context of an increase in the number of cases of domestic violence, the victims of which are primarily women and minors (see below), the magistrates felt it necessary to host this exhibition within the court.

Using panels, the exhibition makes it possible to address the issue of violence against women in several ways. “First there is the question of identifying the violence with a table that details the degrees of control according to the behavior of the spouse.explains the prosecutor, sifting through the panels.

“Then there are the different cycles of violence which are explained in a schematic way”, he continues. “Finally, the collective asked twelve photographers to take on the subject and illustrate violence against women and the influence.

“Some images may shock, so we specify that this exhibition is more suitable for an adult audience,” adds Nathalie Fèvre. On the panels, some creations are explicitly violent, there is blood, wounds, shadows.

“Sometimes an awareness project can go through violent images to cause an electric shock”notes Patrice Camberou referring to awareness campaigns “shocking 80s and 90s on road safety or even smoking.”

The exhibition also informs with a panel dedicated to the various devices which make it possible to further protect women victims of violence. “We are gradually strengthening our resources”explains Patrice Camberou. “We were lucky enough to be able to recruit for a minimum of three years a lawyer responsible for coordinating the actors on this subject in the person of Coralie Guillermou.”

Free, the exhibition will be “accessible without a vaccination pass but with a mask”concludes Nathalie Fèvre.

For Patrice Camberou, public prosecutor, and Nathalie Fèvre, president of the judicial court of Draguignan, doing everything possible to fight against domestic violence is more necessary than ever.

“Across the jurisdiction, we have increased referrals by 30% in one year”explains the public prosecutor. “30% of them are domestic violence.”

The word is free

In fact, the court is dealing with more and more cases. In 2021, the court handled 1,297 cases of domestic violence. These concerned 79.1% of women.

“There is an increase in the number of cases linked both to the freedom of speech and also because of the confinements which have caused a significant increase in cases”, believes Nathalie Fèvre. These increased by 9.9% in one year.

“The response must be collective”

“The response is collective and must be done at each stage of the journey of the victim of the complaint, to the accompaniment of the perpetrator of the violence after the sentence so that there is no recidivism”adds Patrice Camberou.

In 2020, three women were killed by their spouses or ex-spouses within the jurisdiction of the Draguignan court. Two in 2021.
