The United Kingdom’s Maritime Trade Operations Organization (UKMTO) said it had received information about explosions in the southern Red Sea, 40 nautical miles west of the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, Reuters reported.
Nearby vessels and their crews were unharmed, the UKMTO added.
The Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who control the most densely populated areas in Yemen, attacked ships in the Red Sea and the Bab el Mandeb Strait in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian population during Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip, BTA said.
Meanwhile, the cargo ship, which was bound for Varna but was badly hit by a Houthi missile strike and abandoned by its crew, is still drifting uncontrollably on the water and could be towed to Djibouti, sources told Reuters.
The crew of the Belizean-flagged vessel Rubimar left after it was hit by a missile on Sunday. The sailors were rescued by another merchant ship.
The ship is filling with water and its owners are investigating what can be done, the maritime security company “LSS – SAPU” reported. The vessel is registered in the United Kingdom.
The owner company and the Lebanon-based ship manager could not be reached for comment.
