Dry cargo ship VERA SU has been immobilized for four days

There is no immediate threat to the Black Sea ecology yet. However, local residents fear that during a storm, the ship could crash on the rocks.

On the northern coast of Bulgaria, near the village of Kamenny Bereg, a dry cargo ship VERA SU with three thousand tons of nitrogen fertilizers and 20 tons of ship fuel, en route from Ukraine to the Bulgarian port of Varna, got stuck. About this on Friday, September 24, informed agency TASS.

It is noted that the vessel, owned by a Turkish company, flew under the flag of Panama. It got stuck on rocks off the Bulgarian coast on 20 September. Then the crew of nine Turkish citizens did not respond to calls from the vessel traffic control service for about two hours and did not change course ashore, which led to an accident. None of the sailors were injured in the collision.

The operation to rescue the bulk carrier has not yet begun. According to the publication, the reason was that the owner did not agree on a plan for the operation with the insurance company, which must pay for the work.

It was planned to start the transshipment of goods today – with the help of a floating crane, transfer fertilizers to another vessel in order to lighten the dry cargo ship and pull it off the rocks into open water with further towing for repairs.

At the same time, the crew only brought additional ropes to the coastal rocks to provide additional stabilization of the vessel in case of worsening weather conditions.

There is no immediate threat to the environment, according to experts. However, local residents fear that during a storm (a common phenomenon for this time of year), the cargo ship may crash on the rocks.

Previously in the Cretan Sea, off the coast of the Peloponnese (Greece), the ship Sea Bird sank, en route from Ukraine to Tunisia with seven thousand tons of wheat on board. All 16 Syrian crew members survived.
