A ship arrived in Turkey, in whose cabin a dead Ukrainian sailor lay for three days – lawyer

He said the situation was reported to him on December 3 by the crew of the cargo ship Thor (IMO 9291418, flag of the Marshall Islands).

“The sailor has been in a sitting position for three days and three nights. An inhabitant of the Odessa region died in this position, and this happened in the roadstead of the Odessa seaport. However, the ship owner decided not to remove the Ukrainian sailor who died in Ukraine, but to do it in Turkish Istanbul” – said the lawyer.

According to him, on Friday evening, December 3, when the ship was in the roadstead in the Istanbul port, the decomposing body was still in the cabin. It is assumed that the deceased will be taken to Ukraine by plane, but, as the lawyer explained, it takes time to complete the documents.

He said that the team members are under stress.

“People are outraged, some are depressed … In addition to the moral and ethical issue, there is the issue of epidemiological safety. After all, the causes of death of a person are still unknown. The body was not placed in refrigeration equipment, it is in an ordinary cabin. There is a terrible smell on the ship,” the lawyer said.
