a set of mountains in the shape of beehives

Discover the unexpected shapes of the Bungle Bungles Mountains in Northwest Australia. These spectacular geological formations, lost in the middle of nowhere.

In the heart of Purnululu National Park in Australia, stands an astonishing mountain range. Sedimentary formations resembling beehives. It took millions of years for the wind and precipitation to form this ensemble which covers nearly 450 km². Remained largely unknown until the 1980s, the region is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These “exceptional examples of sandstone cone karst owe their existence and their uniqueness to the interaction of several geological, biological, climatic and erosion phenomena” explains UNESCO.
