Social Engineering or soceng often happens lately. The perpetrator, also known as an account begal, uses the soceng mode to drain the victim’s property.
Soceng actors generally act on behalf of banks or certain agencies to make them look convincing. People who are not aware are at risk of becoming victims and their wealth can be drained.
Well, what exactly is meant by koceng? Investopedia defines fraud as a trick to manipulate victims until they give up important information. According to Kaspersky, social engineering is an exploitative manipulation technique for human error.
The purpose of this action is to obtain personal information, access, or valuables. Apart from stealing money in accounts, soceng is often used to intercept company information and exploit state security.
In Indonesia, the soceng mode often uses the name of banks. Recently, a screenshot of a short message was circulated, and a link regarding changes to the BRI ATM administration fee of IDR 150,000 per month with unlimited transactions.
Other fraudulent acts on behalf of Bank BCA. The cover is an offer to become a priority customer to trick the victim. Offers spread on social media through fake BCA accounts.
Another mode on behalf of BCA is an offer to upgrade to BCA Solitaire and Prioritas via telephone and WhatsApp. The same mode is also found on Instagram.
In practice, social engineering actors apply many ways to deceive victims. The most common are disguises and pretending to be financial institutions or banks. Perpetrators contact potential victims via messages, emails, cellular calls to send friend requests on social media.
Soceng can also be done through physical interaction. In Indonesia, there are many modes of criminals who pretend to offer help at ATMs. People who are not vigilant often become victims so that the money in the account is drained.
Clickbait is one of the other types of soceng. Perpetrators lure potential victims with information that seems useful. When the victim is tempted and clicks, the malware virus will infect the mobile device and steal important data.
Well, soceng itself can be resisted in several ways. For example, setting up a strong password and two-factor authentication. The most important thing is not to share any information, for any reason, to anyone else. Especially if this is related to your financial account.
When you receive a message, don’t believe it right away and be more careful. Consider the contents carefully, and if they are deemed suspicious, you can ignore them.
