Now under the umbrella of Meta, Facebook is researching the future of the metaverse, while at the same time trying to develop more tools and equipment to make it an alternative world. He announced that he is working on a tactile glove that, when finally worn, will allow users to touch things in this alternate world.
Although Meta admits that “We cannot be as dexterous in the virtual world as in the real world”, it is trying to change this situation with these gloves. While helping the computer understand and reflect the user’s hand movements, the gloves also aim to provide the user experience by generating a series of complex, nuanced sensations for things like pressure, texture, and vibration.
Meta sums up the experience users will have with the glove: “Imagine working on a virtual 3D puzzle with an ultra-realistic 3D avatar. When you take a virtual puzzle piece from the table, it automatically stops the movement of your fingers and you feel like it’s in your hand. As you hold the piece for closer inspection, you feel the sharpness of its edges and the smoothness of its surface, followed by a satisfying crunch when you snap it into place.”
Instead of using multiple miniature motors to create sensations, Sean Keller, director of research at Reality Labs, says he uses microfluidics. This helps in changing the hardness of the material.
However, despite the absence of a physical object, it is possible for us to create physical sensations with our own perceptual abilities. Sophie Kim, UX research science director, says our brains are pretty good at this.
Mark Zuckerberg also shared the following lines on the gloves developed for Metaverse on his Instagram profile: “Meta’s Reality Labs team is working on tactile gloves to create a realistic tactile feel in Metaverse. One day you will be able to feel texture and pressure when you touch virtual objects.”
In a blog post describing the gloves, Meta writes that the team behind this invention has drawn a vision of what the world will look like in about 10 to 15 years.
