“A sense of proportion instead of drawing board education”

The CDU published the following statement: “In the last SVV of November 30, 2022, the majority of the SVV decided that the youth welfare office of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel should conclude a cooperation agreement with the authority state school in order to implement the “learning group plus” project in a primary school to perform. In this agreement, the principles of cooperation between the offices and staff are to be regulated to ensure lessons, education and care in the “learning group plus”. The CDU parliamentary group did not accept this request from the Youth Welfare Committee.”

And he goes on to say: “From the point of view of the Christian Democrats they spoke against the following reasons:

  1. With this decision, the SVV intervenes directly in the administrative action in an inadmissible manner,
  2. the previous discussion was only about whether the funds for a post of “social pedagogue” will be made available by the city e
  3. Questions about student welfare played no role.

As a member of the education committee, our parliamentary group member Walter Paaschen used an internship to get to know the processes in the learning group. This learning group has a maximum of six students and, in accordance with MJSB specifications, should be taught in separate classrooms by two special needs teachers.

Four students, two teachers and two school assistants were present during the observation. Pupils belong to the focus area “emotional and social development” and in this learning group they should usually experience emotional learning success in order to strengthen their self-image and self-confidence.

Accordingly, Walter Paaschen summarizes the internship as follows: “After two hours of separate instruction, the study group participants return to their actual class. After the successes achieved in the learning group, they are now again confronted with real everyday school life. This is then often characterized by failures and lack of knowledge, as they are increasingly lagging behind in the transfer of knowledge. I think there are other, better ways to help these children.”

The well-being of children is decisive for the CDU parliamentary group. The establishment of a support class therefore urgently needs to be reviewed. Inclusion and remedial schools/classes are not contradictory. The Brandenburg School Act provides for this possibility.

The leader of the parliamentary group of the CDU, Jean Schaffer, says: “Every child has the right to an inclusive education in a normal school and many pupils with disabilities also benefit from it. However, parents and their children also have the right to decide attend a special school. Inclusive schooling is not the best option for every child with a disability. This is part of the truth and must lead to a rethink.”

For the CDU, the principle that successful inclusion requires more sense of proportion in everyday life than implementing education from the drawing board applies. Therefore, we will reopen the discussion on this matter. For the sake of the children.
