New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez (Democratic Party) has been accused of allegedly accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. This was reported by American agencies, citing the Ministry of Justice.
Prosecutors say Menendez and his wife accepted gold bars and cash from three New Jersey businessmen. The senator and his wife accepted the money to “benefit the government of Egypt,” prosecutors said.
The charges come after a years-long investigation by the Department of Justice. The Democrat has used his influence on foreign affairs in favor of Egypt’s authoritarian regime, the AP said.
The two are facing three criminal charges. Prosecutors say Menendez and his wife accepted bribes, including cash, gold, home mortgage payments and a luxury car. This is a serious blow to the Democrats ahead of the upcoming US elections.
$100,000 worth of gold bars were found in their home, as well as $480,000 in cash, stuffed in envelopes and hidden in closets and safes.
