Mulla Abdul Ghani Baradar returned to Afghanistan on Tuesday, two days after the Taliban regained power after 20 years in the country. He had previously been in Qatar, where he chaired a Taliban political committee and led peace talks with the United States on behalf of the movement.

AFP recalled that Baradar landed in Kandahar, which lies in southern Afghanistan, when he returned to the country. The city was the epicenter of Taliban rule during its rule from 1996 to 2001. In the province of the same name, where Kandahar is the administrative center, the movement was also born in the early 1990s. It was founded by Barádar together with Muhammad Umar, who died in 2013.

The Taliban has been headed by Maulawi Amir Hajbatullah Achundzada since 2016.
