A second survivor of the sunken cargo ship off Japan has been found

He was rescued a second crew member of Gulf Livestock 1, a merchant ship wrecked off the coast of Japan on Wednesday after being hit by Typhoon Maysak. The ship was carrying 6,000 cattle and 43 crew members, 39 Filipino nationals, two New Zealanders and two Australians. The rescued man is 30 years old and a Filipino nationality. A few hours earlier the body of another crew member had been found while on Wednesday night the first officer of the ship, the 45-year-old Filipino Eduardo Sareno, was rescued. The man said that the engine had broken down and that the ship was then hit by a wave and capsized.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand foreign ministry said Gulf Livestock 1, a 139-meter Panamanian-flagged ship built in 2002, had left the country on August 14; it was supposed to arrive in China 17 days later. After the accident, New Zealand has suspended livestock exports to assess what caused the sinking and whether the ship met all the requirements for safe travel.
