Prof. Krum Georgiev from Staro Zagora, one of the doyens of our folkloristics, became the second Bulgarian – laureate of the “Oscar” prize, awarded by the international organization IGF, announced the chairman of the Union of Chitalistes in Bulgaria Nikolay Doinov. The ceremony took place in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk during the traditional “Grand Prix of Folklore” meeting.
Prof. Georgiev is the second Bulgarian with this distinction, in 2010 it was awarded to the late maestro Asen Mutafchiev. Representatives of 8 countries were awarded the prize, among them folklorists from Portugal, Croatia, Lithuania, Romania, the Czech Republic, etc.
The IGF was founded in 2006, and its members are folklore organizations and ensembles from 96 countries. Prof. Krum Georgiev’s nomination was made by the Union of Community Centers and was confirmed by a special jury chaired by Prof. Dorel Kozma from Romania. From this year, the general secretary of the IGF is the Bulgarian Rosen Bogdanov, chairman of the community center in Razgrad.
The Union of Community Centers will apply next year for Bulgaria to host the 4-day “Grand Prix for Folklore”. The proposal will be made on December 27, when the executive bureau of the international organization will meet in Sofia. Various possibilities are being considered for the city where the event will take place, in which approximately 2,000 teams from all over the world take part, including Stara Zagora. Books worth BGN 20,000, donated by IC “Hermes”, will be distributed next week by the Union of Community Centers among cultural institutes on the territory of 4 regions – Stara Zagora, Plovdiv, Kardjali and Sliven.
