The impetus for the film was women’s stories of the experiences and feelings of the 20th century. wars in Eastern Europe. The heroes of “Bauta” have lost the ability to live a peacetime life because they have been broken by the experience of war. During the making of the film, much was reflected on the trauma of war and the imprint of the Soviet regime on our society, but no one could have imagined that such circumstances could ever happen again. Probably, that’s why, in addition to tragic motives, it also has a lot of humor, paradoxes and joy in the game. Playwright Evarts Melnalksnis will give introductory remarks at the beginning of the screening, but after the film, viewers are invited to stay on the conversation about “Banuta” in the context of the events of the Ukrainian war.

The interpretation of the film “Baņuta” is related to the violent plot of Alfreds Kalnins’ first Latvian opera and the historical circumstances that influenced the creation of the opera and its corrections. Fighting among the guerrillas in the mythical Baltic past and the wars of the 20th century in eastern Europe, the elderly Lithuanian prince Daumants saves Baņuta from death. Riding a motorcycle, he brings the fighter to his homeland in a white shrine in Romove. The wedding is coming, but it is interrupted by ravens – as a black conscience, they remind of Daumants’ crime against the girl Jargal. Daumants is soon killed in the fight, but Baņuta, as a stranger in Romove, is drawn into the rituals of sacrifice and further revenge. However, she is a fighter – no one will deprive Banuta of her happiness.

The Berlin musical theater ensemble “Hauen und Stechen” has long been engaged in a radical reproduction of the opera’s core repertoire. This is how the opera “Baņuta” merges opera, the conditionality and contemporary performativity of the performing arts, the free reinterpretation of the plot, the introduction of new elements, the use of different languages and forms of play.

The project of the opera film “Banuta” has been created by the association “Sanssouci”, the production association “Storyhub” and the collective of the German musical theater “Hauen und Stechen”.
