A school without grades. What instead?

This was discussed during another of the series of provincial debates as part of the nationwide project “School without assessments” organized by the “School without assessments” Foundation and the Lublin Self-Government Teacher Training Center in Lublin.

The aim of the debate and the entire project is to draw attention to the widespread use of digital assessment as a current assessment at school, which is not in line with the spirit and provisions of the educational law. The organizers will present the results of research and scientific literature, and will attempt to introduce legal order to internal school evaluation systems (checking the statutory provisions of schools, indicating elements that can be changed and adapted to applicable law).

– We want to show the anachronism of assessment, its negative impact on intrinsic motivation and the effectiveness of the learning process. We want to propose a new, although known for years, school formula, which, by means of feedback and built relationships, supports the development of students, and at the same time strengthens their internal motivation and effectively shapes competences that will build our society and its potential – say the organizers of the action and add: – The widespread use of current assessment in the form of digital assessment in Polish schools means that the attention of students, parents and teachers is focused on the assessment, the result and the exam. This is not conducive to taking students’ responsibility for their learning. Usually, the student takes part in the lessons, following the scheme: chapter – section – test – assessment.

After finishing lessons, he does his homework. Mostly, there is no time to develop their passions and interests, focusing on memorizing the content specified by the teachers of individual subjects and recreating them during too frequent forms of checking messages. At school, the student functions from test to test, collecting grades and calculating the average. Only knowledge “reproducers” can be educated in this way.

Such a student will not acquire the competences that will help him succeed in the future. A school organized in this way does not implement the educational objectives contained in the core curriculum, but focuses on the content described there for individual subjects. In our opinion, digital assessment is most often responsible for this, and the remedy is, in accordance with the provisions of the education law, providing feedback by teachers that will help in learning.

That is why the creators of the project strive for a school where a student, interested by the teacher, asks for additional literature and other sources of knowledge in order to explore the issues that interest him. A school where the student cooperates with others, building relationships and learning to cooperate.

The project will be summarized in June this year.
