Four books about Garcia
1. Say Nothing – The Life of Charly García, by Sergio Marchi (Sudamericana)
This is the book that inspired everyone else. And the legend too. Since 1993, Sergio Marchi He became a shadow of Charly García and emerged from the experience don’t say anythinga “diverse, fun and different” biography, as Charly confides, first published in 1997.
It was a great adventure where the author performed unexpected tasks: he was courageous, a leader, a drummer, a very short manager, a lay psychologist and a nurse. He saw it all. He stayed all. He told almost everything.
The book was updated in 2007, a year before García fell in Mendoza and his terrible hospitals. Marchi was again called to his partner, and resigned before a year had passed.
This iteration reaches 2024 and the author distances himself from Charly, which allows him to change his scenes and disperse the fog by adding nine new chapters to the seven of the first update, where will reveal, often between the lines, a good part of the secrets of this period in the life of Charly García, the genius of Latin American rock.
2. There was a time that was beautiful – El Charly de Sui Generis for his friends, by Facu Soto (Editorial Sudestada)
“What do we know about Charly that did not appear in magazines when rock had not reached the media and was something isolated and hidden?” asked Facu Soto. Reporter, journalist, poet and expert -mind with a gender perspective (he also published Charlie Queer. I am still unusualin 2022), explains that the conceptual idea of this book is to “discover” what Charly was like when he formed his first group, when Sui Géneris was still a sextet and not the famous Charly we know familiar
“The García that Facu Soto explores in this book – through reports on the people who were next to him in the early days of his musical career – allows us to get to know Charles before he becomes Charly ; Or is it the same in another time and place? Full of untold stories, all of which overlap with the search for freedom. For the first time we will have access to Charly de Sui Géneris told by his friends and colleagues from that beautiful time: Alejandro Correa, Carlos Piégari, Pedro y Pablo, Ada Moreno, Billy Bond, Jorge Álvarez, Raúl Porchetto, Claudio Gabis , Francisco Prati , Liliana Lagardé, Nito Mestre, María Rosa Yorio, Juan Rodríguez and a profile of her piano teacher Julieta Sandoval,” explained Mario Alberto Martínez, founder and director of the Sui Géneris Fan Club, on the back cover of the book .
3. Attached to anything. A story about Modern clicks (Vademecum)
In 1983, while Argentina began to see the light at the end of the tunnel of dictatorial horror, the country’s most promising musician stayed for almost four months in the United States to make a definitive entry of local rock into the present day to create through him, according to his own author,” the first
democratic record”.
We are talking, of course, about Charly García and Modern clicksperhaps his masterpiece.
This extensive study, with little precedent in the literature on popular music in Argentina, offers a journey into the depths of García’s most iconic solo project.
This is a book about Argentine rock in the early eighties and an immersive biography that covers 24 crucial months (October 1982-September 1984) in Charly’s life. The short time in which the musician started his solo career, he cooked his status as a transversal idol and
-finally- he produced, recorded, published and arranged nine Clicsmodernos songs, a riotous soundtrack of a society trying to live in freedom again.
4. El Aguante – Life by Charly García, by Natalio Balderrama (Editorial Tiquetar)
In the first person, Natalio Balderrama follows her history with Charly García, from the amateur video with clippings from the newspapers of the time that he gave the artist for his birthday . Charly’s phone call that would start a close relationship with his own idol, but also with his career as a filmmaker. “Inspired by touching the hearts of my idols with video, I decided to study film,” the author wrote. There is a picture of Charly’s daily life at the end of the 90s and the beginning of the new millennium, in the middle of the Say No More stage. A comprehensive and valuable report from those years. And a path that leads to García’s 70th birthday celebration. In addition, QRs throughout the book that lead to documents, many of them unpublished.
