A 37-year-old Ukrainian man, a crew member on a cargo ship with the flag of Saint Christopher and Nevis, which was docked at the commercial port of Nea Karvali, was found dead.
According to an announcement by the Coast Guard, in the morning the Port Authority of Kavala was informed that the 37-year-old fell into the sea and has been missing ever since.
The emergency plan was immediately put into action and a Coast Guard patrol boat and a fishing boat went to the scene to provide assistance. The 37-year-old was found unconscious on the inner wharf of the port, at a distance of about ten meters near the stern of the ship and was retrieved by the crew of the patrol boat.
Afterwards, he was taken to Kavala General Hospital by EKAV ambulance, where he was pronounced dead. From the Central Port Authority of Kavala, which conducts the preliminary investigation, an autopsy was ordered to be carried out at the Forensic Service of Thrace.
