A 24-year-old Russian tourist named Yuri Chilikin was deported from Bali after posting an obscene photograph of himself on top of Mount Agung, the island’s highest peak, which is regarded as a sacred mountain by its predominantly Hindu population. Bali has been struggling with unruly visitors wrecking havoc on the culturally sensitive island of late. Chilikin was banned from reentering Indonesia for at least six months after he apologised and took part in a cleansing ritual. In late 2020 a Canadian actor was deported from Bali for performing a Maori ceremonial dance whilst naked. Bali Governor Wayan Koster has called for visa-on-arrival privileges to be removed for Russian and Ukrainian visitors due to a perceived increase in distress caused by visitors from these countries.
