On January 1, during the New Year celebrations, a young woman was ambushed when she was returning to her home in the El Bosque neighborhood of La Florida, in the town of Cruz Alta. The young woman passed some neighbors on her block who were consuming alcohol and who, upon seeing her, attacked her. One of the three defendants intercepted and groped her; then he hit the victim on the face and arm when the girl tried to defend herself. The young woman ran off and was chased by three young men, who later also attacked the complainant’s mother when the woman tried to help her daughter. The woman was injured in the arm and the attackers escaped threatening them with death.
The speed of the new Criminal Procedure Code allowed the case to come to an end on Thursday, in an abbreviated trial. The judge Maria Alejandra Balcázar accepted the agreement reached by three defendants with the representative of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and with the victim. In this sense, the convicted persons accepted their responsibility in the fact that they were accused and received penalties: one year and six months in prison for simple sexual abuse in competition with minor injuries aggravated by gender violence for the accused who attacked the victim. first; six months in prison for minor injuries for the one who beat his mother, and seven months in prison for threats, for the latter.
Requirements
The sentence was not only in convictions; Judge Balcazar also ordered a series of measures and social actions to the State for the benefit of Florida in order to “combat cultural violence” and “reflect on violence against women,” according to the resolution. In this way, Justice urged: the Secretary of State for Human Rights and Justice and the Women’s Observatory, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Office of Human Rights and Justice, the Office of Assistance to Victims of Crimes and also requested the technical support of the Supreme Court of Justice so that these organizations together carry out the task of: “diagramming and executing in a coordinated way a plan in the short, medium and long term, to originate a cultural change in the area of Ingenio La Florida ”.
