Currently, the fastest battery technology for electric vehicles is used at Tesla. Soon, however, that may change, or at least if Elon Musk does not buy the newly developed technology from a legendary scientist to whom the modern world owes the method by which almost 100% of lithium-ion batteries are produced.
Moroccan-born Dr. Rachid Yazami has made careers in Japan, California, France and elsewhere in the world and now lives and works in Singapore. Through his company, KVI, whose office is not far from Nanyang Technical University, has developed a new technology that allows an electric car battery to be charged in just 10 minutes and can provide an electric vehicle mileage of up to 800 km before the next charge.
“We’ve developed a new charging technology that’s the fastest in the world. We’ve recently been able to charge a high-density battery in 10 minutes. If you compare that to Tesla’s 70 minutes, our technology is 7 times faster,” he said. Yazami, quoted by The Register.
According to the scientists, the technology for fast charging of his company works using a new method by which electricity enters the battery of the electric car.
Traditionally, batteries are charged by applying direct current, which is very similar to the way a tank is filled with petrol – you put the gun in the hole and the column starts pumping fuel and filling the tank. The new technology uses “non-linear voltmetry”, which controls the voltage instead of controlling the current, ”explains Dr. Yazami.
As he explained to The Register, this can be likened to a staircase. The voltage must remain constant until the parameters of the respective stage are filled. Then move on to the next.
And so, in the end, the last one is loaded.
In this way, the scientist notes, the battery gets a break from time to time, and as an additional effect, its life is extended.
“Fast-charging technology also extends battery life by avoiding stress. Instead of using the battery in question for five years, you can use it for 10 years by charging it with the new method, because the way it we charge, it does not put it under high temperature or high current “, explains Dr. Yazami
The purpose of its work is to be able to charge a battery in 10 minutes, which will accumulate enough electricity for 800 km of the electric car.
